Respond- Don’t React

December 6, 2014

Prayer ideas from Guideposts {entire devotion below}

Short prayers to help “respond” and not “react” when in tense situations with others.
Holy Spirit guide my words
May my words be pleasing to You, O Lord.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. -Ps 19:14 NLT

Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry.

Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires]. -Ja 1:19-20 AMP

He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding has a cool spirit{is even-tempered}. -Prv 17:27 AMP

Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a [self-confident] fool than for him. -Prv 29:20 AMP

Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to give a gentle answer.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. -Prv 15:1 NASB

Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to speak words of life.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]. -Prv 18:21 AMP

Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to speak words that bring healing.

There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. -Prv 12:18 AMP

Holy Spirit guide my words
Let my speech be gracious.

Let your speech at all times be gracious (pleasant and winsome), seasoned [as it were] with salt, [so that you may never be at a loss] to know how you ought to answer anyone [who puts a question to you]. -Col 4:6 AMP

Respond, Don’t React
By Julia Attaway

My 18-year-old–who has never been an easy child–was exceptionally irrational and argumentative the other day. After a bit of back-and-forth, it was clear that my powers of persuasion were no match for his ability to aggravate.

On the brink of saying something I knew I’d regret I took a deep breath, mentally stepped back, and said my go-to prayer in these situations:

Holy Spirit, guide my words.

Respond, don't react. Photo by Jupiter Images, Thinkstock.

Holy Spirit, guide my words. For words of peace and love do exist and are waiting to be said, even if my frustration-befuddled brain has no idea what they might be.

Holy Spirit, guide my words. For I would rather be guided by the wisdom of the Spirit than by my desperate-to-be-in-control heart.

Holy Spirit, guide my words. For my son needs the Holy Spirit in his own heart, and I need to be open to the possibility that I may be the channel through which that happens.

This prayer first arose in my heart the day it occurred to me that God calls me to respond to Him, not react. If I’m to love others as Christ loved me, I need to respond to them instead of react to their behavior.

Think about it: Reactions are me-centered. They reflect how I feel, and are an expression of what I expect or desire or demand of others.

Reactions are the lightning-quick words that burst forth when I am upset or angry or determined to get someone else to behave the way I want. They are what happens when someone else’s comments or actions strike the flint of my pride.

Responses are the polar opposite: seeing where another person is, and meeting him or her there, with love. Responses involve empathy, compassion, insight and a desire for reconciliation that exceeds the desire to win an argument.

When I first started thinking about this, moving from reacting to responding felt like an impossible task. Yet I’ve learned the distance can be covered with a two-second prayer: Holy Spirit, guide my words.

Which short prayers help you in the throes of an argument?

Keep in Step

Galatians 5:22-26 AMP
22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,
23 Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires.
25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.]
26 Let us not become vainglorious and self-conceited, competitive and challenging and provoking and irritating to one another, envying and being jealous of one another.

Thank You Lord Jesus for Your guidance. Help us to follow Your lead and keep in step with Your Holy Spirit. Thank You that as we do this the fruit of the Holy Spirit will be evident in our lives.

Lord Jesus, please give us hearts willing to keep in step and follow wherever You lead.

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. -Ps51:10-12

Psalm 32:8AMP
8 I [the Lord] will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you..

Thank You Lord Jesus for Your promise to instruct and teach us in the way we should go; that You will counsel and watch over us. Help each of us depend on You, walk alongside You and keep in step with You.

Lord Jesus in Your footsteps, help me keep in step; In Your footsteps help me to daily live. Show me Your path of life.

Psalm 16:11 AMP
11 You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy, at Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

From NetBible Ps 16:11

  • *show me the path of life = cause me to know or experience the path of life

Faith Triumphs in Trouble

November 2, 2014

Romans 5:1-5 NKJV
Faith Triumphs in Trouble

5 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

When you are going through the rain
Let the “Son”shine of God’s love be poured into your heart
It’s then that His rainbow of promise will appear.

Trust in the LORD and His promises
Hope in Him and you won’t be disappointed!

In His Arms

October 18, 2014

Isaiah 40:11 NIV
11 He tends{feeds} His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young.

Through the storms of life
Lead me into your light
Give my heart a new song
When I’m weak, make me strong
By Your word lead me
Into pastures of peace
Hold me close
To safely rest in Your Arms.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. -Ps 46:1 NASB

The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? -Ps 27:1 NASB

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. -Ps 119:105 NASB

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord. -Ps 40:3

Praise You Lord Jesus, You are my light and salvation, my refuge and strength. By Your word lead me, beside still waters into pastures of peace. There, hold me close, to rest safely in Your arms.

Psalm 23 AMP
1 The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, guide, and shield me], I shall not lack.
2 He makes me lie down in [fresh, tender] green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters.
3 He refreshes and restores my life (my self); He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him—not for my earning it, but] for His name’s sake.
4 Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my [brimming] cup runs over.
6 Surely or only goodness, mercy, and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and through the length of my days the house of the Lord [and His presence] shall be my dwelling place.

Praise You Lord Jesus, You are my Good Shepherd. Gather me into Your arms as one of Your own. Hold me still, hold me near. Close to Your word, close to Your Spirit, close to Your heart. Hold me close, let me safely rest in Your arms of love.

Peace of the Lord

Remember, at ALL times, the peace of the Lord is only a prayer away!

Philippians 4:4-7 AMP
4 Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice!
5 Let all men know and perceive and recognize your unselfishness (your considerateness, your forbearing spirit). The Lord is near [He is coming soon].
6 Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God.
7 And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 AMP
16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself grant you His peace (the peace of His kingdom) at all times and in all ways [under all circumstances and conditions, whatever comes]. The Lord [be] with you all.

Thank You Lord Jesus for Your peace that passes all understanding. Help me to remember that Your peace is available at ALL times and is only a prayer away!

Slow to Anger

October 3, 2014

Proverbs 14:29 AMP
29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is hasty of spirit exposes and exalts his folly.

NLT … Those who control their anger have great understanding; those with a hasty temper will make mistakes.

James 1:19 AMP
19 Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry.

Lord help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry. Thank You that there is much wisdom in being slow to anger and slow to speak.

Lord Jesus, help me to have the patience to taste my words before I spit them out!

August 13, 2014

Matthew 7:7,11 AMP
7 Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you.

11 If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father Who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give good and advantageous things to those who keep on asking Him!

James 1:17 AMP

… who does not change like shifting shadows. NIV
… with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. NASB

Safe Harbor Blessing

July 17, 2014

Psalm 107:25-31 NLT    He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits’ end. They cried out to the Lord in their distress; He delivered them from their troubles. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, and for His wonders to the sons of men!

Mark 4:39  NKJV   Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

3 You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind [both its inclination and its character] is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.
4 So trust in the Lord (commit yourself to Him, lean on Him, hope confidently in Him) forever; for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock [the Rock of Ages].

Set Free

July 13, 2014

John 14:6 AMP
6 Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.

John 8:32,36 AMP
32 And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.

36 So if the Son liberates you [makes you free men], then you are really and unquestionably free.

Praise You Lord Jesus, You are the Way, the Truth and the Life. Thank You that Your truth sets free. Help me to know Your truth and be set free indeed. Free to become all You have intended, filled to overflowing with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Thank You that as I surrender to You and You reveal Your truth to me, any yoke that is holding me back will be broken in Your name, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Galatians 5:1 AMP
5 In [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].

James 4:7 AMP
7 So be subject to God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him], and he will flee from you.

Romans 10:9-10 AMP
9 Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart a person believes (adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Christ) and so is justified (declared righteous, acceptable to God), and with the mouth he confesses (declares openly and speaks out freely his faith) and confirms [his] salvation.

Romans 15:13 AMP
13 May the God of your hope so fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound and be overflowing (bubbling over) with hope.

Filled With Hope
