A Heart of Wisdom

January 31, 2017

1 Kings 3:10-12 NASB … It was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing{wisdom}. 11 God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing and have not asked for yourself long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to understand justice, 12 behold, I have done according to your words. Behold, I have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you.

Remember Solomon …
=> Asking the Lord for wisdom, a wise and discerning heart, is pleasing in the Lord’s sight!
=> Asking for wisdom is better than gold!(Pro 16:16)
.

Lord, we desire a heart that pleases You, so please teach us to number our days that we may present to You a heart of wisdom(Ps 90:12).

Living Faith in Christ

January 13, 2016

Ephesians 2:4-10 NASB … But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

  • NLT … For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

James 2:26 AMPC … As the human body apart from the spirit is lifeless, so faith apart from [its] works of obedience is also dead.

Good works of obedience to the Spirit
Are evidence of a living faith in Christ Jesus …

Lord let us be obedient to the leading of your Holy Spirit. Thank You that as we let you accomplish Your work within us, Your fruit will become evident in our lives.

Galatians 5:22-26 AMPC … But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, 23 Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus (the Messiah) have crucified the flesh (the godless human nature) with its passions and appetites and desires.
25 If we live by the [Holy] Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. [If by the Holy Spirit we have our life in God, let us go forward walking in line, our conduct controlled by the Spirit.]
26 Let us not become vainglorious and self-conceited, competitive and challenging and provoking and irritating to one another, envying and being jealous of one another.

Good works of obedience to the Spirit
Are evidence of a living faith in Christ Jesus
Fruit showing who you belong to
Jn 15:8
They shine
Displaying the riches of  His grace, mercy & love –Eph 2:4-10
Glorifying our Father in heaven.

John 15:4, 8 AMPC … Dwell in Me, and I will dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit of itself without abiding in (being vitally united to) the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you abide in Me. …
… 8 When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified, and you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of Mine.

Lord Jesus, help us abide vitally united to You. Thank You that as we do this, much fruit will be revealed, showing us to be Your workmanship. We desire to shine displaying the riches of Your grace, mercy & love glorifying our Father.

Matthew 5:14-16 NASB … You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Waken My Ear

January 6, 2016

Isaiah 50:4 AMPC … [The Servant of God says] The Lord God has given Me the tongue of a disciple and of one who is taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He wakens Me morning by morning, He wakens My ear to hear as a disciple [as one who is taught].

From NetBible Isa 50:4

  • learned[03928] = taught, discipled, instructed
  • wakens[05782] = rouses, to be triumphant
    – from primitive root (rather identical with [05783] through the idea of opening the eyes)
  • to hear[08085] = listen(attentively) to obey, to perceive(intelligently) by ear
Lord, morning by morning waken my ear to listen attentively as one being taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season. A word spoken at the right moment – O how good it is!

Help me to listen and obey You alone.

Proverbs 15:23 AMPC … A man has joy in making an apt answer, and a word spoken at the right moment—how good it is!

Proverbs 25:11-12 AMPC … A word fitly spoken and in due season is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Like an earring or nose ring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise reprover to an ear that listens and obeys.

From  Prov 25:11

  • apple[08598] = apple associated with fragrance
*From [05301] = to breathe, cause to breathe out
and [01054] = place of apples located in Judah[03063] = praise/He shall be praised (assigned to the tribe of Judah Josh 15)
  • spoken[01696] = to declare, converse, command, promise, warn, threaten, prophesy, sing

=>These apples of gold contain a fragrance that can be breathed in and out!

Peace in Wisdom

October 26, 2015

James 1:5 NASB … But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Thank You Lord Jesus, You have a plan for each life. Let each seek Your direction and wisdom for their lives. Let each be guided by Your peace; a peace beyond understanding. Thank You Lord that Your peace rests on decisions aligned with Your plan.

Colossians 3:15 NASB … Let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts …

From NetBible Col 3:15

  • rule[1018] = to direct, control, govern, determine

Jeremiah 6:16 NASB … Thus says the Lord, “Stand by the ways{crossroads} and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”

John 3:30 AMP
He must increase, but I must decrease. [He must grow more prominent; I must grow less so.]

Jesus,
Let people see
More of You
Less of me
For the glory of Your name
Your salt and light I wish to be. –Mt 5:13-16

Jesus,
More of You
Less of me
Make me who I’m meant to be
So people see
Only Christ living inside of me.

Psalm 115:1 AMP
Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to Your name give glory, for Your mercy and loving-kindness and for the sake of Your truth and faithfulness!

Galatians 2:20 AMP
I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Reliance Upon the Spirit

March 6, 2015

1 Corinthians 2:1-5 NASB
Paul’s Reliance upon the Spirit

1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

2 Corinthians 12:9 NASB
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
.

Lord Jesus, help me to rely on Your wisdom, strength and power and not my own. Thank You that my strength is made perfect in my weakness through Your grace.

.

Thank You Lord Jesus that faith does not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. Allow Your message to be heard through a demonstration of the Spirit’s power. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Respond- Don’t React

December 6, 2014

Prayer ideas from Guideposts {entire devotion below}

Short prayers to help “respond” and not “react” when in tense situations with others.
.
Holy Spirit guide my words
May my words be pleasing to You, O Lord.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. -Ps 19:14 NLT

.
Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry.

Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry. For man’s anger does not promote the righteousness God [wishes and requires]. -Ja 1:19-20 AMP

He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding has a cool spirit{is even-tempered}. -Prv 17:27 AMP

Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a [self-confident] fool than for him. -Prv 29:20 AMP

.
Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to give a gentle answer.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. -Prv 15:1 NASB

.
Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to speak words of life.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]. -Prv 18:21 AMP

.
Holy Spirit guide my words
Help me to speak words that bring healing.

There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. -Prv 12:18 AMP

.
Holy Spirit guide my words
Let my speech be gracious.

Let your speech at all times be gracious (pleasant and winsome), seasoned [as it were] with salt, [so that you may never be at a loss] to know how you ought to answer anyone [who puts a question to you]. -Col 4:6 AMP

Respond, Don’t React
By Julia Attaway

My 18-year-old–who has never been an easy child–was exceptionally irrational and argumentative the other day. After a bit of back-and-forth, it was clear that my powers of persuasion were no match for his ability to aggravate.

On the brink of saying something I knew I’d regret I took a deep breath, mentally stepped back, and said my go-to prayer in these situations:

Holy Spirit, guide my words.

Respond, don't react. Photo by Jupiter Images, Thinkstock.

Holy Spirit, guide my words. For words of peace and love do exist and are waiting to be said, even if my frustration-befuddled brain has no idea what they might be.

Holy Spirit, guide my words. For I would rather be guided by the wisdom of the Spirit than by my desperate-to-be-in-control heart.

Holy Spirit, guide my words. For my son needs the Holy Spirit in his own heart, and I need to be open to the possibility that I may be the channel through which that happens.

This prayer first arose in my heart the day it occurred to me that God calls me to respond to Him, not react. If I’m to love others as Christ loved me, I need to respond to them instead of react to their behavior.

Think about it: Reactions are me-centered. They reflect how I feel, and are an expression of what I expect or desire or demand of others.

Reactions are the lightning-quick words that burst forth when I am upset or angry or determined to get someone else to behave the way I want. They are what happens when someone else’s comments or actions strike the flint of my pride.

Responses are the polar opposite: seeing where another person is, and meeting him or her there, with love. Responses involve empathy, compassion, insight and a desire for reconciliation that exceeds the desire to win an argument.

When I first started thinking about this, moving from reacting to responding felt like an impossible task. Yet I’ve learned the distance can be covered with a two-second prayer: Holy Spirit, guide my words.

Which short prayers help you in the throes of an argument?

Slow to Anger

October 3, 2014

Proverbs 14:29 AMP
29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is hasty of spirit exposes and exalts his folly.

NLT … Those who control their anger have great understanding; those with a hasty temper will make mistakes.

James 1:19 AMP
19 Understand [this], my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear [a ready listener], slow to speak, slow to take offense and to get angry.

Lord help us to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry. Thank You that there is much wisdom in being slow to anger and slow to speak.

.

Lord Jesus, help me to have the patience to taste my words before I spit them out!

.

Psalm 141:3 NLT … Take control of what I say, O Lord,
and guard my lips.

From Our Daily Bread:

Lord, help me watch the words I say
And keep them few and sweet,
For I don’t know from day to day
Which ones I’ll have to eat. —Anon.

.

From Our Daily Bread:

Lord, set a guard upon my lips,
My tongue control today;
Help me evaluate each thought
And watch each word I say. —Hess

Bite your tongue before your tongue bites others

Inner Truth

June 15, 2014

Psalm 51:6 AMP
6 Behold, You[the Lord] desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart.

From Commentary

inward parts/being = the heart
The sincerity and true self-discernment which God requires can only come of spiritual insight, or, as the last clause states it, divine instruction.

Psalm 139:23-24 AMP
23 Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Lord Jesus, help us willingly submit our hearts to Your searching and cleansing, for You desire truth in our inner most being. Continue to lead us in the way everlasting. Help us to hide Your word in our hearts. Amen.

Bow Your Ear

August 3, 2013

Proverbs 5:1-2 AMP … My son, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experience], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you] … That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation].
KJV … bow thine ear

Bow your ear is the opposite of listening without application. Bow you ear, humbly desire to hear and apply wisdom so that you may act with foresight & speak with insight!

.

Praise You Lord Jesus You are full of grace and truth(Jn1:!4). Help me to bow my ear to You and humbly desire to hear and apply Your words and wisdom to my life. Help me to act with Your foresight and speak with Your insight bringing honor to You.
